Restaurants near Sup's and Flagstaff
Hi, our AZ trip starts in a couple of weeks and we're down to the details...
We'll be staying 3 days in Chandler and dayhiking the western Superstitions; need restaurant recommendations in that area. A few days later we're spending the night in Flagstaff and would appreciate dinner recommendations there. Also in Flagstaff, we'll probably have a few hours to kill and after 4 days in the Grand Canyon may not feel like hiking - any suggestions for other things to do? Is the observatory worth a visit (moon will be close to full; this will be Tuesday night of Thanksgiving week).
Thanks,
Will

Re: Restaurants near Sup's and Flagstaff
I'm about to commit treason. I don't like, and I have not had Mexican Food that I have not been sicked by since I moved out here. I don't want people telling me I just need to try this or that, and no, isn't the spice or that it's too hot. I make my own food way hotter than I ever had eating out (except Thai) and I have made some dishes at home that are fine. I think it's the hygiene. I had New Mexican food in Sante Fe and a small town in the Sangres two years ago. It was good and I had no trouble. I eat Taco Bell from time to time, but every time I eat it in Arizona, it sickens me. It pretty much has just been Flagstaff, but still.

I don't recommend it...not much better at all. Go to Brandy's 5 minutes away or Miz Zips if you don't want to venture off of 66.te-wa wrote:the mike and rhonda's out on the 66, not the west side one, that one stinks

Re: Restaurants near Sup's and Flagstaff
Yep it's still there. It's probably about a 1/2 mile from my house. Never eaten there though. Before the statewide smoking ban went into effect, and it was enforced within the city limits, all the smokers were writing letters to editor of the Daily Sun saying that they were only going to eat at Mary's Cafe because they were free to smoke while they ate.Alston Neal wrote:Is Mary's still there in Flagg, over by the Winona turnoff? Near the Supes - Los Gringos Locos in Apache Junction on Phelps Drive near the Apache Trail (Main St). Good food, good service, great outdoor patio and fabulous frozen Margaritas!

Re: Restaurants near Sup's and Flagstaff
I spent the summer in Flag, and noticed that about restaurants and stores there--several places are not what I'd call clean. The Safeways are especially obvious, when compared to the ones in 'tukee. Several restaurants also. I first noticed this several years ago at a coffee shop on Beaver Street, I was with a group or I would have walked out.Jim_H wrote:. . . but every time I eat it in Arizona, it sickens me. This doesn't change my earlier recommendation for El Charro-all was well there.

I'll second this; especially the Margaritas.snakemarks wrote:Near the Supes - Los Gringos Locos in Apache Junction on Phelps Drive near the Apache Trail (Main St). Good food, good service, great outdoor patio and fabulous frozen Margaritas!
For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.

Maybe you're getting too comfortable with the brand-new ultra-sterile urban sprawl of the valley...Sredfield wrote:I spent the summer in Flag, and noticed that about restaurants and stores there--several places are not what I'd call clean. FYI, our Safeway's have been remodeled, and yes Hygiene is a problem for many places around here. I never understood that. Maybe it gives us a rustic feel.

We were hiking in the Anchas Sunday, mainly so we could eat at the El Rey. They were closed..
.. and they had a sign on the window....Closed for cleaning.
