Mazatzal Dayhikes 12/3, and others to follow

Post by BobP »

I am planning on doing some searching on the above date. Hopefully by then this won't be needed. I thought I'd give advance notice because they are week days that I've taken off or Fridays which I don't work. One may be a route from the North depending on the terrain and weather. Im still working on investigating some routes. The one day will probably be a shorter day. All others will be dark to dark. When I have definite plan, I'll post an area for each day . Hopefully help finish any drainages that haven't been searched. When the time gets closer I'll unlock the thread. If your interested just post here that your interested or pm me and we'll work out details.

I live in Deer Creek, from my backyard I can see the whole area from North peak to Gold peak near the 201rd. there is a light snow on the Mazatzal's now and forecasted for more, be prepared for a bad road in and MAJOR cold weather gear required, the last few morning in my yard it's been in the low 20's, Please contact me if I can Help in any way!

I will keep an eye out for a Saturday (12/4) plan, Cabo & I should be available and willing to go anywhere.
After Fridays adventure, I recomend shin guards for all, specially if you have to wear a dress to work, :) all that brush is tough on the shins. I think the weather should be ok by the weekend.
I do not have a GPS for track posting.

Great idea : app : though unfortunately I can't skip on work since we're shorthanded... And yea, my shin guards worked great out there! ;)

I might be back up there --drive up Fri and take a look at some spots on Sat/Sunday. Won't know till later this week. If I am up there I'll monitor channel 14 on my radio. Be extremely careful on north side, some big drops there.

I wish I still lived in Arizona for many reasons, and heading up to the Mazatzals to search for Joe is one of them. I have noticeable scars on my legs courtesy of those mountains.

Bob, have you decided where you are going to explore on Friday 12-3?

has anyone been down to the gowan camp during the search? I plan on going out to the area early Sunday morning and don't see any GPS tracks down in the creek yet.

I passed through there, Joe removed it from the main map. Noone appeared to have been down there in awhile, although there are a pair of sunglasses about a mile from the TH.

Where you able to confirm those were not his? Maybe he went back to find them?

Sun Hiker did not think they were his by the description. Comparing to his photo, I would tend to agree.

You can see what parts of the Gowan Camp area I passed through. To me it appears as red route #2 here:
