Galiuro Wilderness access, FR 691

Post by Jim »

I'm leaving Arizona's gray overcast rust belt in Flagstaff and heading to Tucson for a few days. I plan to access the southern end of Redfield Canyon in the Galiuro Wilderness. This is not the Redfield Canyon Wilderness, which is adjacent to the area I intend to visit but is separate. I see a trailhead on the Coronado NF FS map I printed from their web page, but we have no information on the area in the HAZ Trail Dex. It looks like FR 691 is Gamez Road on the Map we use for our street names. Has anyone had any experience in this area with trailhead access? We will be using my friends Outback, so we expect that as a forest service road he will have no issues. I see no known hikes on our DEX from this trailhead, so perhaps I will be writing up a description or two when I return, hopefully with information on access.

So, again, anyone have experience with the area or know much about access to the southern Galiuro Wilderness in the Redfield Canyon area?

This is the lat and long as given by the DEX at the trailhead location:
32.410032 N, -110.321267 W

Don't know, but track would be great if they can be loaded on the HAZ map.

Your coordinates are about 200 yards from Bradberry cabin.

I didn't know that. My friend down there wants to check that area out, and I want out of Flag, so that is where we may end up going. He mentioned Bassett Peak, too, if that road doesn't work out.

I posted some pics of the cabin and the GPS route at http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=15860.

Were did you find the trailhead information.
We followed a couple trails, but did not see any trailhead signs (we were not looking).
We found some trail cairns.

The FS wilderness map on their web page. If the yellow dot is Bradberry, then no that is not the destination. How is the road going on that loop?

The yellow dot was me. I couldn't figure out the second route posted as a scribble with six points. Since that point was on the drive route I thought maybe it was were you started hiking. I'll remove it.

32.410032 N, -110.321267 W is real close to the cabin. There is a trail from the cabin.
Is there a way to name waypoints (and individually place then unattached to the route) when you upload the GPX file?
The second "scribble" was my attempt to place waypoints for the two turns to get to the Bradberry cabin, Jackson Cabin and Hooker Cabin.
I did not make it all the way to Jackson Cabin, but it appears that you can make it all the way from Bradberry. It is on my tic list.

If you are driving a Subaru, I would approach from the south drive. After you pass the cabin from the south, you need to boulder crawl through the riverbed. A Subaru will probably get high centered.

I just looked at my Forest Service map and FR 691 is further east.
I do not think that the way point in the first post will get you to FR 691.

not yet... it's high on the todo list! Have some major projects underway right now. Also working with (basically reporting and waiting at will) with Google to fix some issues with the framework that runs the maps.

Not a waypoint that is downloadable but you can enter coordinates in the upper right and it creates a nameable marker, then link like so...
http://hikearizona.com/location_g.php?QX=238

Can also create waypoints under "Route Mgr", set to public and share links, just not tied in with uploading yet.

I thought that picture of the Bradberry Cabin looked familiar. Years ago we started our hike to Cherry Spring Peak from there. Came in from the south from off the Redington Road. I have also hiked over to Cherry Spring Peak from FR 691.

Oh, I have hiked Cherry Spring Peak, too. That is all I can tell you though. Someone else was driving! Neat area, though!

Well, who knows what will end up happening. I'm just hoping for some sun and not completely foggy skies, plus a hike would be nice.

Is 691 the route from Muleshoe to Jackson Cabin---that's what it looks like on the map? If so I've driven it perhaps 8 times. You will need a HC and 4wd vehicle to get out from Jackson cabin. The initial approach you can probably get away with 2wd unless it's snow or wet. Not sure about the outback, depends on how aggressive a driver your friend is. You'll have to cross the "crick" which is usually not deep.

Thanks for the responses. Being unsure of the road, we opted for Bassett Peak and an eastern entry.
