Question on How to Search for Hike here

Post by tdefrane »

So I am only a few months going on HAZ, but absolutely love it. Question on how to use something or find a link. And I have read through the FAQs and I can't find the answer. :)

So I have seen a few people post links to 'areas to hike' similar to that on the homepage for the White Tanks, and other areas to hike in metro phoenix that is 'in season'. I like how that map will actually give you an overhead view of many maps in that area. When you mouse over, you can get details of the hike and click for more details. I have seen the TrailDex, but that only appears to show the TH for each hike. I'm doing some last minute planning of a hike this weekend and left my paper map at home so I can't see what connects, etc. Is there anything like this for the Lower Superstition area (like Peralta area trailheads)?

A link to this would be useful, but more importantly, I'de like to know how to get to this data myself. :)

Thanks in advance!

Hi

I'm not sure I fully understand your question. I think you are trying to find out which trails are available in the western Superstitions. If so there is a special map here http://hikearizona.com/images/flashmaps ... nsWEST.swf

or in TrailDEX Map you can zoom into any area of choice, right click then click the red circle icon to find hikes.
The white circle finds routes.

A Mapped Area for the Superstions West like I think you are seeing for the White Tanks would be cool. Hopefully someone steps up to the plate coordinates one.

TrailDEX will show a lot more than just the trailhead. Try looking around there again.

Thanks for your help guys...
I like the following for White Tanks: http://hikearizona.com/location_g.php?X=3

or there is the Flash Map for the Supes... I wasn't sure if those were special of something that I can find for any of the trails that you have listed by drilling down somewhere. Does that help you understand what I mean?

Thanks,
Todd

yeah there only 4 of the Mapped Area maps currently out

anyone is welcome create other areas
A Mapped Area is a collection of Official GPS Routes for an area. Look at the Phoenix Preserves near Piestewa Peak for example. Here the most popular inner city trail is surrounded by lesser known trails. Reviewing it here makes it easy to form your own loops.

If you are interested in creating a new Mapped Area contact the webmaster with a list of Official GPS Routes. Maps under 20 routes are best. Only hikes listed on site with an Official Route may be used. Only complete projects will be posted.

The white circle finds routes.
Thanks Joe. This is a useful tool that I use a lot (though I didn't know about the right click option to pull up the floaty menu.)

Anyway, lets say I right-click and then click the white circle to find routes. In the lower left is a text listing of all the routes now on the map, and you can click on each one and plot it on the map.

Is there a way to "plot all" so that if there's 20 routes in your geographic area you don't have to select each and plot them one at a time?

This would have a net result very similar to the "mapped areas" that the OP asked about ... and also helps find intersecting routes that might be named wrong or otherwise difficult to find.

Of course if somebody tries to plot 200 routes on one map, it might kill the server, or their computer, or both?

The internet is about 5-10 years away to being fast enough to plot all.

Not as good but...
Part of the last roll out of TrailDEX Map included a new overlay system. Right click > Counties to see it in action (only works on zoomed out levels right now). Hopefully within the next year I'll have nonot's member contributed tracks layer available.
