Bike GPS

Post by kingsnake »

Tried using my hiking GPS with my bike about a year ago, but could not find an easy way to attach (and detach) it from the frame. I know there are bike-designed GPSs, and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations?

I know normal bike computers, operating off a magnet and wheel turns, do speed, distance, etc. (My current unit also does temperature!) So, why change to a GPS? Mainly for AEG, but routes and tracks would be handy.

Thanx,

P

p.s. Another advantage would be getting rid of the wire that runs from the computer down to the magnets on my front wheel. It was poorly routed -- around the brake like -- so that if I tilt the computer wrong, the computer wire pulls on the brake line, causing the brake to drag on the rim. Great for cardio, poor for efficiency.

They make bike mounts for different hiking GPS's. Not sure which you have. Here is one example.

Thanx, coanbru. Never occured to me. Would be much cheaper than buying a second GPS, especially since I like my 60csx so much. :)

for anyone with an Oregon I prefer this bracket
http://www.rei.com/product/768859/garmi ... 7688590012

there is less to break and the zip ties are replaceable
a small rubber patch between the handle bar and bracket helps keep position

2 of the reviews on it say their gps fell off (I've found it superior myself to other setups)
all I have to say is that if this setup doesn't work then I think the chances of the other breakable setups will never work for your abuse level

I wipe out more on sidewalks than on trails, so as long as it can stand up to a Phoenix canal, I am probably okay ... :)

the city is pumpkin dangerous! :stretch: I've lost count of the times I've crashed over a curb or been hit by cars.

In addition to hiking I also use a GPS (Garmin eTrex) for cycling. I use a handlebar mount for my hiking GPS, it replaces the battery cover with a cover that attaches to the handlebar mounting bracket. I mainly use this on my mtn. bike. I also use a Garmin Edge 200 for my other bicycles. Pleased with the GPS and no problems with the mounting brackets.

Hey Preston, I used the Ram Mounting System for my Lowrance. I was able to transfer the mount from my pick-up to my boat, my ATV or my bike. With the right selection of mounting parts, it will mount on just about anything you have. BTW these things are almost bullet proof if you crash.

I purchased a Garmin Oregon 400t this summer so I need to get new parts for my mounts and this is the way I'll be going.

I have the Garmin Edge 800 I have attached to my mountain bike and like it a lot. Display is touch screen and large text/numbers. I'm now waiting for the release of the Garmin fenix

Ya, but does it tell you what time it is? ;) Looks like I might just have to get "hooked on Phenix", since I live there any way.
