Walnut Canyon via Battle Axe Rd

Post by CannondaleKid »

I'll admit this is a last-minute deal but even though I'm 'retired'... plans and schedules can change with the wind.

Anyway, I'm going to kill two (probably even more) birds with one stone tomorrow. I'm still not sure what order this will happen, but by priority this is what I'm shooting for:
1. Driving out Battle Axe Road to the Gila River to drop off a 12-gallon water cache where AZT#16 turns north away from the river.

2. Drive a loop through Walnut Canyon and...
a. Take a 1.5 mile off-trail hike to the summit of Peak 2640 @315' AEG
AND
b. Take a 1.6 mile off-trail hike to the summit of Peak 2925 @201' AEG (neither of these should be too big a deal)

3. Drive north off Battle Axe Road and...
a. Take a 2.5 mile off-trail hike to the summit of Peak 3578 @~1000' AEG
OR
b. Take a 3.25 mile off-trail loop hike to the summit of both Peak 3578 and Peak 3580 @1532' AEG

4. Scan and maybe some recon of the slopes of Battle Axe for a future summit attempt.

I'll most likely do 1, 2, 2a & 2b in order, then see how much time/energy I have left... but with #3's being by far the steepest & toughest I will probably leave them for another trip.

I'll be leaving the East Mesa area about 6 am so it should be within a few hours of sunrise when we begin the first hike. I'm flexible with the plan to be home mid-to-late afternoon, just no later than 5 pm.

If anyone is interested, PM me before 9 pm this evening. Kicking in $ for gas is optional as I'll be getting some mileage reimbursement for dropping off the water.
