Flower Alert

Post by montezumawell »

What with this dry, hot winter (what else is new?) it's time for people to begin posting up flower sightings.

On our part, there are white primroses galore on the Bell Trail along Beaver Creek beneath the Mogollon Rim. Yesterday on the Beaverhead Trail, we observed a tiny yellow flower in profusion.
We are currently looking through our flower books to try to determine its nomenclature.

What about you? What are you seeing?

The Flora Index has plenty of room to grow.

[ Old invalid link removed ]

There isn't much there yet but it will grow with time. The circled "I" is for info, click on it. Clicking on the flower name takes you to a list of hikes featuring the specific plant.

Photos can be crosslinked to that index. However I don't have a form on site for that yet. Probably summer or later before that surfaces. PM in the meantime.

Now that I've hiked much of the cool stuff I'm focusing more on the trail itself. I studied Arizona flora this past summer and barely scratched the surface.

People have been asking often, what's next for HAZ. I just remembered! A butterfly index is something I've always wanted to do. Don't get too excited as it's probably a couple years away.

Dang, I must be getting old, boring stuff is beginning to excite me

The three of us were hiking in the San Tans on Friday and saw some beautiful Golden Yellow Desert Poppies. That was really some eye relief or "made my eyes do the dance of joy" said our hiking partner!

Also, the Brittlebush is beginning to flower on South Mountain across the road from our house.

Starting to see the poppies coming out along the Beeline Highway on the way to Payson so everyone should keep a lookout for them soon. Two years ago it was one of the best sights that we had seen before!!! The past rains have really got them blooming (here's hoping for more rain and snow)

Gosh, we forgot this topic even existed--as we started it.

The white evening primroses are in full bloom in these parts. They don't produce "carpets of color" but they provide nice "spot color" along the trails. The globe mallow just came out in the last couple of days. We've spotted a few isolated Indian paintbrushes here and there. Perhaps the most interesting color comes from plants we don't know the identity of. They are probably noxious weeds (Ha, ha). Anyway, in the limey, very alkaline clay soil areas there are large swaths of purplish blue flowers. In other such areas there are acres of tiny yellow flowers. Viewed individually, they aren't much to write about. But when view "en masse" they really change the whole tenor of the landscape. Quite a nice sight.

I posted an orange flower up from my 2-16-03 Waterfall Trail hike (White Tank Regional Park). I don't know what kind it is though.
