Grand Canyon in March? Tapeats? Nankoweap?

Heading into the Grand Canyon in March over spring break, camping for 4 days, wondering what the weather will be like? Also, my cousin and I are big on flyfishing and I know some good fishing exists in the mouths of many of the streams that flow into the Colorado, not to mention the rainbows will be spawning this time of year also. Those of you who have experiance fishing if you would please give me your suggestions as to which and what creeks we should target. Tapeats? Bright Angel? Nankoweap? etc...Thanks for the help. -Brian

Tapeats was great last October.
You better plan on next year, unless you're planning on paying for a guided group. I would imagine all permits have been taken. You might be able to "walk up" and get a canceled permit the day of, but don't count on it as a sure thing.
Permits should be applied for as early as possible. Maximum time ahead to apply is 4 months I think. PM zenphx, he'll tell you about the great rainbows in Tapeats Creek. PM Maryphyl, I'm sure she'll have some recommendations as well.

Now that I reread your post, are you planning on rafting possibly?

Something else to keep in mind... I sent a link to zenphx sometime back regarding Colorado River releases starting in March. Unfortunately I don't have it any longer, but the upshot is that fishing might be poor in the river due to murky conditions. You might want to plan more on the creeks than the river as they should not be as affected. Maybe you can find a related article on the park service site. I also wouldn't rule out getting a permit at a late date. Backcountry areas, especially mid-week, are at least worth a shot.

My boyfriend fishes--or tries to. The last few years the fishies have been shrinking in size. In the past but not recently, he has had good fishing in the big river at South Canyon, Jackass, and Nankoweap--all above the Litttle Colorado. Tapeats has very small fishies but our son caught some decent sized ones near the river there two years ago. I have seen lots of fisherfellows at Bright Angel so there must be something there.
