The Crack

Post by montezumawell »

The Crack is a geologic feature near Bell Crossing about 3.25 miles from the Bell Trail Head on Beaver Creek east of I-17 at the Sedona exit. It's a destination of sorts for lots of hikers. We counted 30 cars in the TH parking lot Sunday and we'd bet most people were going to The Crack.
We waited until Tuesday to go. Not many people then. We went there to see how the higher water flows behave. It wasn't what we expected. There isn't a roiling rapid where we thought there would be one. There are two small rapids. One above and one below The Crack. We also went to the Weir to see bigger flows there. The USGS gauge said it was only about 160 cubic feet per second but it sure seemed higher.

We put all of our digitals from this hike on the net, mostly to show to a distant friend. Normally, we wouldn't put so dang many of them on the net. Anyway, we made a thumbnail page that's not too much of a chore to open up for a dial-up connection. There are no picture titles since they are all pretty well self-explanatory.

If you're planning to go to this "fee-free" trail, avoid weekend unless you are a real socialite and just LOVE crowds!
