Devil's Chasm - Dog Friendly?
Hi All,
Just curious if Devil's Chasm is a dog doable hike. I would of course leave her out of the ruin, but is a dog capable of making the hike.
My puppy is an 85 pound black lab mix and a great hiker. I'm concerned about the big boulder and second waterfall.
Anyone been up there with a dog?
Thanks Y'all!
Paul

Re: Devil's Chasm - Dog Friendly?
I haven't taken my dog up there, but have done the hike numerous times. I would advise against it.
I have the advantage of having a dog small enough and willing to ride on my shoulders. (30 lb.) There are sharp plants along the way especially if you end up using an alternate path up. The slick rock waterfall and boulder section would be difficult for a bigger dog and hoisting unless you are planning on bringing climbing gear. My dog has done flatiron a couple of times and I've never thought about bringing him along to Devil's Chasm. Hope that helps.

Re: Devil's Chasm - Dog Friendly?
I wholeheartedly second MtnBart01's opinion and I'm pretty liberal with places where I think you could take a dog. Your dog would literally have to be "hoisted" up in those spots and if you and/or your dog are not used to doing that and don't have the proper gear, you could be putting both of you in serious risk of injury. Besides that point, Devil's Chasm has a reputation of being a serious haven for Rattlesnakes this time of year, adding yet another potentially serious problem arising....Leave the Dog at home for this one...
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty & well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, totally worn out & proclaiming, "Wow What a Ride!"

Yeah, it was hard enough getting ourselves through there. A dog that big would be quite a challenge.Outdoor Lover wrote:Your dog would literally have to be "hoisted" up in those spots

Re: Devil's Chasm - Dog Friendly?
Thanks all. This was the answer I expected and I agree with you. My hunch was this was not a good one for my K9 hiking bud.
I forgot to think about the rattlesnakes as well.
That's good enough reason to leave her home right there.
Thnx!
Paul

Re: Devil's Chasm - Dog Friendly?
A couple of years ago I ran into two guys camping next to me on Cherry Creek. They were heading up Devil's Chasm the next morning with full dog hoisting rigs. When we spoke again via facebook sometime later, they told me that they tried to get the dogs up there, and even with hoisting, it was difficult beyond practicality, so they abandoned the attempt. Also, provided you could somehow get your dog up that last stretch (lol) where would you put your dog while you explored the ruin?

Yes just did this today, definitely impossible! That last section is one of the most hardcore scary stretches of "Trail" I have been on in AZ. Glad I left the pooch home.

It's a bit steep and slidy in spots.pixelfrog wrote:That last section is one of the most hardcore scary stretches of "Trail" I have been on in AZ.

Re: Devil's Chasm - Dog Friendly?
:STP: It is possible but definitely not recommended. I saw a group with a small, white, curly haired dog (I'm no good with breeds) that made it to the top. I couldn't imagine getting a 85lb pup up there though. Probably a good thing you left your pup behind!
