he sure got close, though! Looks like he opted for the easier summit to the east :D

@Tough_Boots did he document it?
Curious to read it. Only saw the scribbles on his map at the BCO for Isis. Looked like a kindergartner drew it so wasn't sure.

I liked his tale of trying Ra, must be ridiculous if he waited!

@joe bartels

I found some guy's flickr that has digital version's of Harvey's master map of all the route's he did. NAU has it in their library I think. I'll PM you a link to the image. It shows that Harvey made an approach but summitted the butte just east of it for some reason. I'm not sure if you want me linking a random flickr account in the forum. I'm about halfway through Grand Obsession so I've got Butchart on the brain these days :D

When I read that book I was completely astonished to find out that a woman I had known for years here in Springerville was Harvey's daughter, Ann Madariaga. She passed away last year, unfortunately. If you have been to Springerville, you may have noticed El Rio Theater, a small cinema on Main Street. It is supposedly the longest-operating movie theater in the state. She and her husband owned it. Well, I guess Sam still does own it. http://cinematreasures.org/theaters/1529

Harvey's maps are in the Special Collection at the Cline Library. Several years back inner canyon ranger Chuck Sypher, my mentor at Grand Canyon, was able to borrow the maps long enough to get them scanned. <A large format scanner was needed.> They are now digitized and available to anyone.

These two maps are 1948 re-prints of the 1927 Francois E Matthes and Richard T Evans "Topographical Map of the Grand Canyon National Park Arizona" West Half and East Half.

A friend with a large format printer made me copies of each. They are quite remarkable in detail. Not only are minor tears in the paper evident but also places where liquids had been spilt.

Mike

I have seen routes draw up to Isis on Harvey's map on the wall at the BCO. They looked questionable and carelessly drawn compared to others. I just looked at the map on Cline and see no routes for Isis ( other than a lighter colored circumference which I'm guessing is Clubb since I see no mention in his journals for himself ). Also searched and see no mention of Harvey attempting or summiting Isis. Just Harvey talking about Merrel Clubb circling, college students that succeeded and his cessna flyover. Do you know if he submitted as I would enjoy reading about it?

Joe.

I see what you mean. But at the top right margin of the map Harvey hand wrote that routes lined in red were Clubb's. I think he might have just been using a lighter blue pen <or maybe not?> but the same pen is used for the route to the top of the Redwall below Set and also his route to Hall Butte, plus a couple other places.

I don't think Harvey was so much into peak bagging as he was in finding routes through the Redwall and rim to river routes.

I could check Harvey's logs but that would take more time than I have available in the next few days. I have photocopies of all of his original logs. They make a pretty high stack! When Wayne Tomasi typed them all so they could be internet available I did the final edit for him. That little project took me over a year. Wayne did one heck of a job with all that typing. His sons Aaron and Pernell put out an excellent gc book: Grand Canyon Summits Select. One of the "Selected" summits was Tower of Set!

Onother thing.... One of Harvey's reaons for going to that 'small' butte southeast of Set was to see what might have remained of the old cross canyon tramway that was partially built in the early 20th century.

Mike - could you direct me to the link? - I have access to a large format printer myself and would love to make a print of both. Since the prints for me are free as I have to have something to conduct my testing - if anyone would want to pay postage I can hook you up for the cost of shipment and packaging. Let me know....soon as I have the images I can then figger out size (for me largest I can create would be 24x36) and then the related costs fro getting it out.

The above links take you directly to the Matthes/Evans maps, but there are more maps and Harvey's logs that can be found on the link Joe put up.
