The Details
Los Burros is a 14 mile loop hike that encompasses some beautiful alpine and ponderosa regions in the Apache Sitegreaves national forest. The USFS website calls the trail(#631) “an ideal trail to take during the hottest days of summer because of the high altitude and many sections of the trail are shaded. Aside trip to Lake Mountain Lookout can give you a wonderful view of the area.”Don’t be discouraged by the mileage! Although it says 14 miles round-trip, the total elevation gain over the 14 miles is only 500 feet! So this will be easy-peasy,even for those of you new to backpacking! The trail-head is located at Los Burros Campground.
Getting There
From Lakeside, take State Highway 260 to McNary on the White Mountain Apache Reservation. In McNary, turn left on Forest Road 224, following signs to Vernon. Drive approximately 8 miles until road signs direct you to turn right into Los Burros Campground. Drive to the far end of the campground to find the trailhead. We’ll plan to leave Friday at 7:00pm and head out to the trailhead area.
We will plan on setting up camp there at Los Burros Camp ground on Friday night and get started Saturday morning after breakfast. We will then plan to hike 9-10 miles on Saturday (remember it won’t be that bad!) before we setup camp for the night. This will leave us with a nice and easy Sunday and we’ll have plenty of time to get back to the valley.
