Reason: Split from "National Park Sequester Cuts", text of first post edited to make sense for new topic.

And...anyone wanna take a ride tomorrow??? Will most likely have to drive up to Roosevelt...Not one Tonto Phone Number has anyone answering it....Not even the main Office in Phoenix....

We've been getting folks in from overseas that are at a loss as to what to do. They've had their trip planned around the GC and are confused about places like Monument Valley and Canyon De Chelly. Are those run by Natives or the Federal Government?
They've been told to not even try to get a place in William or Flagg because the hotel/motels are full.
I feel sorry for these folks, a lot of money and planning down the drain.

The Moose are absolutely rejoicing right now...For the first time in a Century, the Wildlife actually have the Parks to themselves!!! Probably great timing for them too, since they are all in Rut right now...There be Wild Dancing in the Forest these days without any human interruption!!! :D

Alston, don't know what to tell you on that one...I know a lot of people are diverting to Sedona....I think that if it's like Antelope Canyon, they should be good, since that it is entirely on the Reservation and run by Reservation Guides...I would think Monument Valley may be the same, but not sure about the rest....

Now with the government shutdown, who's going to feed the squirrels at the Grand Canyon?

I heard on TV news that in a typical October, 18,000 people daily plan to visit Grand Canyon National Park :o

Not sure if you were expecting an answer or just giving an example of a question already knowing the answer...so I will assume the former and answer it :) Monument Valley is a Navajo Nation Tribal Park, and is not Federal so it is open; same goes for the Little Colorado River Overlook and Antelope Canyon which are also on Navajo land. Also, Havasupai and the Grand Canyon Skywalk are also open as they are on reservations. Canyon de Chelly is strange because it is a National Monument (thus federal land), but there are Navajo that live in the canyon bottom. I would however be under the assumption that Canyon de Chelly is closed to visitors, yet its residents are still allowed to stay (similar to Grand Canyon).

We got turned away from Joshua Tree in the 1996 shutdown. I hope we won't go two-for-two.

Does anyone find it odd that they had these professional quality signs ready to go almost immediately following the shutdown? Meanwhile the Echo Canyon opening will be delayed for months due to back-ordered parts.

They probably had them from the previous Shutdowns....This isn't the first time, but as far as I'm concerned, it had better be the last time...this whole thing is so stupid....

That exact sign was made for the April 2011 govt shutdown that was averted at the 11th hour. I have a photo of that exact same sign taken back then, in April 2011, behind the ranger station at Lee's Ferry.

We were going to do the Rim to Rim at the Grand Canyon and had to cancel our reservations on the North Rim and in Tusayan. Went on a hike near our cabin instead... was the first time in a couple years that my husband was going to do the hike..

Oh ya! Here you go guys!!! This is great! This Congressman has the very nerve to not only blame the Park Service and it's Employees, but also the entire debacle on one particular Congressman....No responsibility on his part whatsoever...no....That Park Employee should get a Medal for withstanding that kind of stupid Publicity Stunt from an idiot, and doing so with absolute Professionalism!!! : app :
