Moving to Casa Grande / Phoenix / Kayenta / Anywhere

Well, I guess I'll have to change my screen name soon. My wife and I are going to be moving to Casa Grande before the end of the year. Listing the house for sale up in Page. No job yet, kinda scary, but my wife needs to go back to school full time. Even commuting to and from UofA, with the house prices in CG we'll save money over moving to El Pueblo. Big change - this will be my first time living off The Plateau since '99. Eeek!

Why do you think that is? Have you ever lived out here? You seem to like, or tolerate very well, living in NJ? I was asked if I would be visiting family next month back east, and no part of that sound pleasant. Just don't want to waste time and money going there, not at that time of year.

I don't think I know why. I haven't spent more than a month at a time anywhere west of Iowa, but I've spent about that much time in several places. NJ is OK for me because I like having ready access to almost anything I can think of, while still being able to live in the woods on the side of a baby mountain. Satisfying work is a huge plus, but I'll relocate very soon after that's no longer necessary to a place more suitable to my whims. I can sympathize with your wanting to avoid traffic and the dreary winter skies.

I have a friend that drives from Yuma to Mesa and back every Friday. Maybe we could arrange for a shuttle to move some of your more precious things from Eagar to San Diego. From Eagar to Mesa, then Mesa to Yuma and then from Yuma to San Diego. You have friends in all four places plus those of us on HAZ.

I will be with my friend from Yuma tomorrow and ask him what and how much he can carry. Don't know what he drives or if there is another couple with him and his wife but I will find out.

Thanks very much, but where would I keep it once it's here? I now have most of what I need here, and everything else is in a large self-storage unit in Springerville, plus overflow in a shed on my property in Eagar, per agreement with my renters. Self-storage units here are anywhere from twice to three times the price. I never did plan to bring all of it here. I really need to try to SELL more of it!

Gawd, that statement makes me feel old and tired. (Yes, I know you were kidding...)

Where am I going? Somewhere warmer in winter, of course! Actually, the plan is that I will go to Valley Center, California (a North San Diego County rural community) to stay at my son's while he is deployed and help my DIL and granddaughter until about March or so. By then I hope to own a motorhome, or be well-employed, (or something!) It's sort of vague. I'll be working on my master's degree, online, so I can live anywhere. I've been looking at places to park an RV in Camp Verde and Cottonwood. Also Flagstaff, for summer. There are some prospects. The idea is to keep the rent under $200 per month.

Well, got the motorhome, anyway! Bought it today, seems mechanically sound, but interior is in need of a very good cleaning and prettying-up. 1989 Ford Fleetwood Jamboree, 26 feet, with 43,000 original miles. I'm not sleeping in it tonight.

Thanks, guys! I have some stuff I need to do first before I live in it. Having carpets and upholstery professionally cleaned, most likely, and a lot of cleaning of cupboards. The guy left me a LOT of useful stuff--dishes, pots & pans, flatware, tools--but it's all crammed in every which way, and I need to sort it and clean drawers and cupboards. He left me all the bedding, so of course it all needs washing, and the whole thing needs a wiping down inside. And then I want to make some brighter curtains, etc. It has a lot of storage, and a complete tow package, so I will need to get my car set up for towing. Kayak travels on top of my car. There is a storage bin on the roof, too.

Well, I just decided I have had enough of my current situation, and am going to leave my job. I bought an old Camaro, mid-70s, and a small single wide trailer I will park on the beach near Malibu. I plan to start solving old crimes, cold cases, and some private work for lonely wealthy women. Mostly, I'll be known for my rag-tag bunch of friends, and my answering machine messages. Also, after that gets old, I think I'll just drift, and continue solving crimes.

I just have to say I am puzzled by nomenclature, as I often am, as to what Jim means by a "small single-wide"? ;) You don't "park" a single-wide. You have to hire a mobile home moving service to move it and set it up for you. It's not a travel trailer, in other words. (Jim and I have had this conversation before, when he referred to a motor home as a "mobile home.") Sigh. Education is so important. What are they teaching our children these days?'

Oh, and I'll be sure to be looking for any cold cases. I'll look in the fridge.

I think a single wide might be considered a "park model". Larger than a travel trailer but can still be towed around, just not long distance.

Either way, he's not going to be happy using a mid 70s Camaro for the tow vehicle as 1975 saw the introduction of the catalytic converter. The top engine put out an anemic 155 horsepower. Also the city of Malibu is not going to put up with a mobile home parked on the beach. At least not if Cher has anything to say about it.
