Pine Canyon Trail #26 Sunday May 30
This one should be pretty difficult, making the day off on Monday very necessary. Starting at the Pine TH and hiking all the way up to the Rim and back down. 15-16 miles RT (depending on what you read), 1900' AEG. Leaving Mesa at 5:30am.

Pine Canyon or Jim's alternative sound pretty good to me. I'll probably tag along either way. Can we carpool from the valley?

Re: Pine Canyon Trail #26 Sunday May 30
I'm scheduled for surgery on Tues, May 18 at 8am, so I'm pretty much officially out for this one, unless I can find a way to haul a big enough pack without putting weight on that shoulder. I'm looking at a 6week to 2 month recovery time, and then 6 months later I have a 2nd surgery to take out the plate they're gonna bolt to my clavicle on Tues. For the sake of convenience for everyone else, i guess its probably best for me to leave myself as committed so this whole event doesn't have to be resurrected. have fun everyone.

I was giving a tour of the plant to some vendors and walked up this berm.
on the way down I tried to jog thru it and stumbled. I felt my center of gravity go past the tipping point and tried to roll thru it. almost made it. It's pretty steep.

That berm looks like you should be launching dirt bikes off it!Stiller wrote:I was giving a tour of the plant to some vendors and walked up this berm. Total bummer! Surgery is no fun-- I had back surgery last year. Definitely not worth the time off of work...

Yeah, it wasn't the brightest move I ever made.rdavisiii wrote:That berm looks like you should be launching dirt bikes off it!
Back problems lend themselves to a whole different world of pain to begin with. This should hopefully be simpler than back surgery and get me on the right track sooner than later to get this to heal properly. Its just the 2 months in a sling that's gonna be a PITA. That and no big hikes.Tough_Boots wrote:Surgery is no fun

Re: Pine Canyon Trail #26 Sunday May 30
Once you get healed up, I recommend a book called Pain Free: A Revolutionary Method for Stopping Chronic Pain by Pete Egoscue. It really helps nip some problems in the bud. Mostly it teaches you stretches and exercises for different areas of the body. I was a little skeptical about it and then realized that many of the back stretches were basically versions of what I was being taught by my physical therapists-- so I would expect its pretty right on for other bones, joints, and muscles. My girlfriend has also found it helps with her knee pain. Any serious injury can really put the body out of whack.

Re: Pine Canyon Trail #26 Sunday May 30
I'm actually thinking of taking the family up to that TH that weekend now to do the one mile (or so) loop that's there. I'll be almost 2 weeks into my recovery by then, so I'll be pretty stir crazy, and it will be too hot to do any hikes in the closer areas in Phx. so if anyone still wants to try this (and not Jim's alternate Parker Creek deathmarch), organize the rides, etc, I might be up there later in the day to say hello.

Here's the before and after photos. 1 more month in a sling, and then rehab. In 6 months I have a 2nd surgery to take it out.

Re: Pine Canyon Trail #26 Sunday May 30
This thread started as a cancelled event and turned into my shoulder injury. Just had my 2nd surgery on thursday. Hardware was removed and no reconstruction was necessary, meaning the recovery time is going to be WAY shorter
. Looks like I might make 300 miles by the end of this year now.
Here's a pic of what was holding my shoulder together for the last 6 months. You can scroll back on the thread to compare with x-ray I posted way back.

Congrats! Wow, I'm surprised that they let you take the hardware home. I always thought they would treat that stuff like biohazard material and dispose of it like an amputated leg. I have 2 screws in my thumb and I definitely want them back if I even need to have them removed.
