I am an avid camper and day hiker having lived in AZ my whole life. I and a friend (who has never hiked) would like to dip our feet into backpacking. We have all the needed gear but would love some suggestions from experienced members. Where would you suggest going for an overnight hike for beginners? Something less than 6 miles each day and relatively easy in terms of elevation gain. Thanks in advance!

At this time of year, the western Superstitions tend to be a popular choice for easy backpacking.

Hackberry Spring from Horse Lot is one option, as is Second water trail. Both start from First Water trailhead, or the overflow Horse lot if you don't get there early enough for the prime parking.

Agree; Bluff Spring loop or an out and back to La Barge or Charleboi started from Peralta are also good options in the mile range/close to it

Hey Chad556. The folks that are weighing in are super knowledgeable about these areas. And indeed, this is beautiful. In addition to scoping out the terrain, you'll also want to make sure that you string together your nights so that you have the certainty of finding water. I'm not sure if you got rain up there last week (we did in Tucson), but there are some semi-reliable springs you can rely on.

Of course, you can always basecamp somewhere and then do longer daytrips once you're in--with a lighter pack and the certainty of water at night.

Other than the Supes, you might look into spots on the Mogollon Rim. While it's a bit (prolly at least 15 degrees) chillier up there, it's very beautiful and very different from the low desert scenery you might already be used to.
