Hey thanks, glad to be here. We were using the Canon Powershot S30 3.2 M http://www.powershot.com/powershot2/s40-30/index.html I was surprised at the quality from a digital camera, they have come a long way over the past few years. It was a bit scarry putting a $500 camera on a rock in the middle of a stream but hey...

Have you been on other parts of Fossil creek?

How was the road? Can I make it in my Honda Accord with it's low clearance?

I took my Toyota Tercel to the lower trail head without a problem. It is a bit rutted so you have to drive slow but it works. I have hiked pretty far back from the main dam area and there are some great camping spots. I have been there twice and have only seen maybe one or two other campers so it's a nice place to get away. Check it out, you will like teh constant 72 degree water from the mountain. Let me know if you would like more info tlombor@yahoo.com

I once heard that the water in the creek, even when filtered, cannot be consumed because of excessive mineral content. Can anyone confirm or deny?

Well, we parked a car at the top and one at the bottom. We were really thirsty heading out on flume road, and it was getting HOT. We wet down our shirts and the dogs with flume water, and against my better judgement I filled up my platypus 1L with it. We drank most of this water, and were probably very lucky. However, none of the four people or the two dogs got sick from the water. I'd definatly recommend filtering it or at lease some iodine before trying this stunt again!

It has been several years since I have been there, at the time they were talking about shuting down the power plants at Irving and Childs and no longer dirverting water into the flume. Does anyone know if they have done this and what has happened to Stehr Lake ?

I believe it's still flowing hardy. For sure was last June.
Stehr was still aqua green then too.

We were there in Febuary and the Flume was running as usual, and
last week i read an Audobon Society article of the Plant,and it said the closure and the Dam de-commisioning will take place in 2 years ( `04 )and at that time the regular road grading will stop, which should decrease Traffic. How this will will affect the area is sure an interesting thought.....

I boiled it which helps to settle out both the suspended and dissolved solids. The taste was a little off but it was drinkable....at least I drank it with no ill effects.
