Hiking Suggestions - Mid-march 3day/2night trip

Post by descendents »

I have hiked many places around Arizona as I was born and raised here. However I have not gone on any overnight backpacking trips. This Spring break I am planning on taking a 2 night backpacking trip with a couple of my friends. While we are all backpacking novices, we are all in good shape and are capable of doing most hikes that dont require technical climbing. I was wondering if anyone could suggest some of the better 3 day/2 night hikes (preferably loops) in Arizona. I would like to stay away from some of the really high altitudes for fear that it may be too cold. I would really like to backpack Aravipa Canyon but I think it may be too late to get a permit and the water may be too cold when hiking up the canyon.

Thanks in advance for the help,
Kelly Olson

Superstition wilderness offers a bunch of loop possibilities. March is a great time to go before it gets hot.

In response to descendents' reply:
Go to Hike Indexes and click on Backpacking. Go to the drop down box on the left, click, scroll to March, click. Go to the drop down box on the right, click Tucson. You should get a page plus of hikes to evaluate. Maybe someone in Tucson could help you with these hikes.

If you are interested in hikes in other regions, simply change the region in the drop down box on the right.

That is this site 8) 5stars are the consensus best, 4 stars are awesome and some 3 stars are underrated.
Where do you want to go? Tucson, Chiricahuas, Supes, Santa Catalinas, Mt Wrightson, Galiuros, Pinalenos? They are all within your reach.

Maybe someone will come through and say "You must go here". But if you evaluate those hikes from TrailDex and ask about specific hikes maybe you will get more specific info. Right now you are asking everything about everything which is likely to get you nothing.

From looking at it, my choices would be Bassett Peak, Ash Creek or Powers Garden. But my first choice for a backpacking trip is always Nankoweap. :o  Got permit for May. -Hoorah. Got my permit for Tapeats Creek/Deer Creek in April.

this is a great loop

Personally I'd hesitate to recommend it as you haven't logged any hikes. Since you've hiked many places around Arizona the insight would help direct you in the right direction.

Otherwise as Al mentions. Just go to Backpacking

select a month, then select a region
and hit up the 5 diamond rated loops

When sorting by month when I choose to go to the next page it displays results for every month. If i select march on the 2nd page with all results it sends me back to the first page with march results. Is there anyway to sort through the pages that only apply to that month?

Hey thanks for the fix, great site by the way. Its working flawlessly now. Im sure you have plenty of things to do but I would also suggest making it possible to select multiple perks to search for. This may just be my computer not allowing it, but I am not able to search for a backpacking hike AND a perennial creek, AND etc. Just a minor detail but would be a handy feature. I guess if anyone is still checking in on this thread I would ask if anyone knows how Powers Garden is this time of year. I am considering checking it out for this upcoming trip.
