Hello, i'm looking for a great hike that i can make an overnighter not looking to travel far from PHX (prescott is about as far as i would go) Also need to be able to get a 2wd car in and out (its new so no scratches would be a +)
would like to go up a mountain but its not necessary
I don't need big miles but i do not mind them
thanks!

Apparently you can get a passenger car all the way to horsethief basin in the southern bradshaws. I know you can get to crown king, and you just have to be real careful the additional 6 or 7 miles to horsethief basin. The only hike around there on this site is the Big Dipper, but I know there are twin peaks, castle creek, and some others. Do one of those and submit a hike description on this site. Every time I pass Sunset Point those mountains lure me, but I've never been back there. It's close too! I plan on exploring around there this summer... I've been studying maps of the area lately.

To be honest with you, I've never actually been there. I've done research on the area from afar (the internet) and the prescott national forest website briefly describes a few trails in the immediate area. I would just like to explore someday because it seems like it doesn't see as many visitors as the other mountains close to the valley, like the mazatzals and superstitions. I'm sure there's a reason why, but it sitll interests me.

About 2 miles outside of Crown King (going back towards Cleator) is a forest trail, 525 I think. There wasn't a sign there when I went up last week, but I have seen it before. There is a pull off on the left on the way up at about the 24 mile mark(?). Also don't forget Crown Kings general store, excellent fudge and home made to. Crown King is also home to one of my favorite signs, "Warning, road not maintained beyond this point")!! After 26 miles of dirt road that has to be the funniest sign I've seen in AZ so far!
