First, ask yourself what's causing them; poor fitting shoes/boots/ :P sandals :P ? Are they causing pain? If yes, you may need to go to a podiatrist to have them removed; if no, ignore them!

Well if I remember to do so, I just sand them down once in a while. Give 'em a nice baby bottom feel. If I forget, they crack and hurt like a mother. Guess I should just put "sand feet" on the calendar each month.

I wouldn't have mentioned it but somebody gets a great big old laugh everytime I whip out the 100 grit.

So, I was just checking to see if this may be a "bad" procedure.

I agree with Johnathon, maybe you should consult a podiatrist, especially if they're causing any pain.

Causes?

Post by GTG_AZH »

joe, do you go barefoot a lot? I used to get the same thing back when I never wore shoes. I had such calloused feet I remeber kicking broken pieces of glass on the shore down at Castle Rock.

Don't ignore it Joe.

My mother, who has never had a driver's license (bad eyes) has walked everywhere her whole life...she walks to school (teacher)...she walks to the store...everywhere...I remember her complaining of callouses 20 years ago (when she was in her 30s)...she never got them checked out, and today she has tremendous foot pain.

I have callouses, but no pain. If/when they start to cause me pain...I'm making the doctor's appt.

you guys are hillarious

I can hear it now. "joe's got a foot problem"

there's no problem, it was just a question

Probably better for the teva board then the HAZ board!

There is no pain. The only pain that would be is if the callus gets over a quarter inch thick and then it splits. When it splits the skin "splits" so you have an open wound. I know how to prevent it. Either wear shoes, which I don't. Or sand 'em, which I've done for years. I was just curious if anybody else "sands the ol' feet" too. Or if they had better advice.

I probably shouldn't have mentioned it period. My girlfriend gave me the old sigh and eye roll as I was sanding my feet tonight. So I thought it'd make a good topic.

What was I thinking :?

Nice to meet another "foot-sander." I've been sanding my feet for years. I know what you mean about those ugly cracks. I was talking to my sister the other, another fellow foot-sander, and she said she's now using Bag Balm. You can get it in the drugstore. I haven't tried it yet, but her feet look 100% better.

I don't get them very often, but when I do I use a rotary tool with a fine bit. With the real fine bit, it doesn't do any damage if you go to far. It won't "bite" into soft skin, so it just rubs once through the rough stuff. I've even got my wife to do it.
I also know people that use the powered hand sanders that work off vibration. You get a nice foot massage in the process. I prefer the rotary tool because it's faster and you can't remove too much.

Lizars feet

Post by GeorgAZ »

This is so common, especially in Az. as it becomes more dry here. Bag balm will work-you have to slather your feet with it+wear socks overnight-also soaking your feet+using a pumice stone or foot file, available at any Sally's Beauty Supply. It is best not to sand too much while foot is dry because you can cause cracks to open+become VERY painful! 8O There is also(at Sally's) some callous removing moisturing type rubs you can apply, which are very soothing-check at the counter or go to the nail section. Wearing sandals ,open shoes+going barefoot attributes to the dryness. For those of you men not afraid of jeering comments , go somewhere+get a pedicure. It feels awesome to have your tootsies+feet treated, sanded(as only a pedicurist can do). Many men come into the salon for foot treatment-keeps your feet healthy+happy!! :)

Sanding feet

Post by Snick33 »

Hey Joe,

Talk to your girl friend about the sensuality of foot sanding. Mutual sanding can be like tickling one another with feathers or the old whipped cream thingy.

Patty and I like to start out with 80 grit and finish incrementally with a nice 200 wet or dry. We have friends that got into steel wool but frankly, I find that very too kinky.

Have you considered...

Post by olesma »

Well, not to send you down a path that might cause you to question your manhood - but, a good Hawaiian peducure might do the trick.

Pumice stone to remove the caluses, hot was dip to moisturize everything, a good foot massage to go along with it.

Then they can put some nice rose colored polish on those lovely toes...you know...to give them strength AND beauty...

Then you can go out and buy a skirt later...

Now, now...

Post by olesma »

Hey, now - before you go labeling me as sick for mentioning the hot wax (mind you, I'm not rejecting the title - just postponing it in this particular case) - keep in mind that is what a Hawaiian pedicure it - they quite literally dip your feet in hot wax. My wife has done it and she swears by it - she says it is a very luxurious feeling, and it supposedly does wonders for your feet.

Yup. Hot wax. Go figure.

Now - whoever came up with the concept...that might be an interesting story...

Belt Sander

Post by Randy »

Belt Sander is tooo dangerous....It feels so good you can slip and hit the high speed button, then everything up to the ankle is gone....One of those Porter -Cable profile sanders works well (so I've been told...) You can grind up aspirin into dust and mix with petroleum jelly and paste liberally over calluses and cover with a sock. About three days of this and everything just peels off down to the fresh skin. They used to sell an ointment like this but it must have caused some concern to diabetics, so it's been pulled off the market.

Snick is right to avoid steel wool. Sweat leaves iron oxide stains...I duuno about people who talk about feathers...I was always told that using a feather is kinky, using the whole damn chicken is perverse  -R

My wife has one of those hot wax dipping thingies.... It really does help...

Give her a call for advice on toenail polish colors that will accent your skin tone and eye color
