Kingman area/ Hualapai Peak?

Post by Jim »

Other than what I can find on this site and the BLM website, are there any good hikes in the Kingman, AZ area? I am especially interested in climbing Hualapai Peak. Is this possible? Or, is the Kingman/ Mohave county area dead for interesting mountain hikes?

Believe anybody passing by is locked into "Grand Canyon Tunnel Vision".
All that's listed in the area is

Bull Mountain
Cherum Peak Trail
Sawmill Canyon Hualapai
Sugarloaf Mtn Bullhead Ci
Wabayuma Peak Trail

Sawmill Canyon looks to be the most interesting.
Hualapai doesn't look like much of a hike as the area is a labyrinth of roads, but you could certainly do it.

There are trails in the Hualapais, that much I know, and yes, you can climb Hualapai Peak. I guess I'd check out the following resources:

1. Mojave County Parks: Hualapai Mountain Park.

2. Old book (out of print??) Arizona's Mountains by Bob and Dotty Martin

3. Mtn. biking book: Mountain Bike America: Arizona by Paul Beakley, features some trails in the area around Kingman.

4. Kingman Chamber of Commerce

5. Book: Exploring Arizona's Wild Areasby Scott S. Warren. This book doesn't have the Hualapais in it but does have nearby Wabayuma Wilderness, Mt. Nutt Wilderness and other areas, with directions how to get to these areas.

If you're still open to the Kingman area, contact our local BLM office at 718-3700. They can tell you of a number of hikes available that haven't been mentioned. The Hualapai hike is a good day jaunt. Another is the Mt Nutt Wilderness area. Check with BLM, though. They've got a lot of information.

You bet, in fact there are 5 reports on the county high point web
site google "cohp" I expect you can get pretty close to the top
right now, though snow may be a problem up high.

Also, the summit has a huge rock on it. You can get your
hand level with it without climbing it. It has a class 3 move
with some exposure to get on top, or a friend can
try to boost you up there. This is all a lot more dicey
with snow/ice, so I'd want to make sure it was melted
off before heading out there.
