Photoset - what do you look for?

Just curious about what makes a HAZer tick, I guess.

You've got kind of a different perspective though, since you get to see all the photos that come through before they go up! :) ;-)

Well, I must have too much time on my hands, cause my reason is the same as Joe's.

I'd have to say a combination of the first 2. If I've done a trail alot I like to look at some cool pics of what I am familiar with. And if I want to do a hike I'll browse through the photosets of the trail.

My reason varies by whim. Here are a few of my reasons:

* Somewhere I've been and would like to see again (subcategories: different time of day, different season, and just want to see it)
* Somewhere I'm considering for a hike
* Posted by somebody I recognize as often posting good photos (or visiting places I find interesting)
* Posted by an old-timer
* Just because it's new
* Followed a featured photo
* No particular reason I'm conscious of

#1 To see if I have been there before.
#2 To wish I could see it again or for the first time if I have not been there before.
#3 And lastly and most important of all, to enjoy the quality of the photographers efforts. :thanx:

I guess I'm "other" myself. I like to see pictures of trails I've been on, but also general areas I'm familiar with. Sometimes I'll follow whatever the featured photo is, if its attractive enough. I find myself often looking at photos from my area up here, and only looking at Phoenix or Tucson pics if their featured photo is intriguing.

I enjoy looking at all of the photosets if I have time. Otherwise I just look at the thumbnails and open the ones that look interesting.

I try to look at all no matter what but first look at the thumbnails if lots of city views or people may not look at that set. But will look at all sets there could be that one that will inspire me in taking a different picture.

I almost never look at photosets. For one thing, it takes too long to load--I have dial-up. If I do look it may be because I'm planning to go to that place. Or, like the Tanner rockslide, something has happened to change a place I have been before. Forest fires, flash flood damage, etc., will get me interested enough to look.

Although I think most of the photos are very nice, basically, they get kind of boring after looking at half a dozen. I would rather have the experience than look at photos. I also would rather have a conversation on the forum than spend time looking at photos. Just my preference I guess.

This reminds me that the author, Colin Fletcher, wrote about breaking his camera. As I recall, he said it made him look at things much more carefully, and he liked the idea that he was no longer looking at things in terms of the perfect photo angle, but instead in terms of experiencing them and really looking at them, instead of peering at them through a lens.

Awwww! Sorry, dude! Dial-up is a pain, lemme tell ya--it is sooo slow. It is probably more reason than any other for me to spend far less time trying to look at photos. I will need high-speed, though, within a year as I am going to be working online, (paid employment at home.)

Not currently living in Arizona at this time, I became obsessed with finding all of the photos in Pixel Master and Pixel Sleuth. I think I have now seen at least 98 percent of all the photo sets and just a few days ago I found the last picture. Joe, your server can now take a rest! :D And Preston your shot of the stone at Jakes Corner was the last picture I was looking for. Now if I could just figure out the correct answers to the questions of Pixel Master!

I especially like wildlife pictures. Those rare shots such as ringtails, owls, bobcats, etc. I often used to open a can of sardines before I bedded down for the night when I was backpacking, to draw the ringtails in, so I could get a picture of them. That sardine oder would waft downwind and although I would usually fall asleep before they came in, my sardine can would always be licked clean in the morning. I would set the can about eight feet from my head and keep the camera in my hand. Unfortunately sometimes it would be a skunk and if so I would just roll over, close my eyes, go to sleep and forget about getting him excited with my flash. Keep those pictures coming folks as I won't be back to my Arizona haunts until October of this year.....

I usually try to scroll through all of the new sets, as well. There are so many places in the state that I look at on a map or read about and think: "I'll definitely go there when time permits." It's exciting when one of those unknowns pops up as a name for a photo set. It brings that need for continued exploration fresh to mind...

Anything down here in the SE part of the state I'll absolutely give a look - I like to see others' perspectives on some of the areas I'm really familiar with...
