Reservation Dog

Post by Snick33 »

Our trip to Durango was cut short by differential problems in the Jeep. We ended up having to turn around and drive slowly back to Glendale. In the middle of the Navajo Reservation, Patty noticed a small puppy sitting along the road so we turned around and he ran up to the car. We offered him water and food and we drove him around to a few houses to see if we could find his owners, no luck. He looked to be about 6 weeks old and was a mess. His ribs were sticking out, he had fleas and ticks. His mouth was all cut up as if he had been eating prickly pear. He was very dirty and sad. We ended up getting to Cortez Colorado and bought a kennel, leash, collor, flea collar, food, bowls, toys, brushes, and all the other accoutrements of puppying. We found a motel that took pets and gave him two baths, cleaned his ears, (very yuck!) brushed him and fed him. We then set to work on removing the ticks and cactus needles from his coat. He yelped for an hour but he started looking reasonably canine again. He slept like a baby between us but was suffering from nightmares all night. He has us hooked.

On Monday I took him to our vets and they gave him a complete physical. He has parasites in his ears and his intestines. We got him all his shots. the vet then gave us the grim news; this was not the terrier / mutt mix that we thought we found but rather a German Shepard / Rotwieller (sp) mix that the vet seems to think will grow to about 140-150 pounds. He does have a sweet disposition and is very smart. Our three cats are not happy with the new addition, to say the least. As soon as I remember how to send a photo, I'll do so.

Snick - forget about anything I said about you earlier  . That is a great thing you did. Very generous and very risky. Most people would have just driven off.

Bring the little dude to the Shindig next Saturday. We'd all love to see him.

Am I sensing a HAZ mascott here?

Awesome thing you guys did, Snick!

Did you name him yet? How about "Koko" (short for "kokopelli"), or "Haz"!

Name

Post by Snick33 »

His name is "Scout" by the way. Cats are a lot of fun, but their is nothing like a dog; faithful, loyal, and dedicated. Dogs know what they want and ask for very little, Cats don't know what they want but they want more and more of it.

And he loves to swim, , , , , , , nude.

I hope that when I have the time and space for a dog, that I find a cool dog like that.

Snick33, I think yo and the wife might have just paid off a few sins to get a little closer to heaven.

If his back can take it, I think Snick33 needs a big hug,,,,, with our clothes on.

Congratulations! Lucky new dog owner!

Well done Snick! A person's true personality is reflected in what they do when they think nobody else is looking. Yours shines through!
As a side note, I heard a new age vet a few months ago talking about treating dogs for co-dependence. I thought to myself, a dog is a pack animal. They are Supposed to be codependent!!! THat's half the point in having one!

Scout

Post by Snick33 »

Scout is great, we got rid of the ticks, fleas, and whatever that was in his ears. He's bright, a quick learner and very loyal. Apparently he and the 3 cats have reached an agreement as to turf, and the difference between cat and dog food. He loves the pool and enjoys joining me for my afternoon therapy swim. He chews everything, and I mean everything: chairs, rocks, flowers, stones, pool filter, himself, and my toes.

As smart as he seems to be, he does have a few "flat spots". He cannot leave this one plant along, no matter what the punishment, and he seems to forget the difference between carpet and grass.

My favorite look he does is what I call the: "is this OK"? It's as if he's afraid of going back to the painted desert so he kinda asks before he does, (mostly) things.

Snick, bless you for rescuing Scout. He sounds like a great dog. I wouldn't worry too much about his bad habits. Most of us have one or two bad habits and his don't sound too bad (except for the carpet/grass thing).
