Scottsdale seeks name for 'Other Mountain'
by Lynh Bui - Jul. 27, 2009 12:00 AM
The Arizona Republic

The mountain that lives in the shadow of its older, more popular sibling is getting a little attention this month.

Sometimes referred to as Round Mountain, Red Mountain or even the "Other Mountain," Scottsdale is looking for an official name for the mountain next to Pinnacle Peak.

The city is asking the public for suggestions on a possible moniker. Friday is the last day to submit recommendations.

John Loleit, Pinnacle Peak Park coordinator, said the mountain needs an official name for scientific and safety reasons.

"Some of the research we've done in the park involves plants on this mountain, and we need to refer to its location," Loleit said. "We could use the name also to alert the fire department if there is an injured person on Pinnacle Peak or the 'Other Mountain.'"

The mountain sits next to Pinnacle Peak and is roughly 200 feet smaller than its sister peak.

Loleit said he has received dozens of suggestions.

Some research papers and books refer to the mountain as Red Mountain for its reddish color, which stems from the concentration of iron at the base. Round Mountain refers to its physical shape. Suggestions also have included animal names, such as Sidewinder Mountain or Chuckwalla Hill, Loleit said.

"We've been doing research or we're hiking on the trail and we refer to it as the 'other mountain' or 'that one over there,'" Loleit said. "Last year, we said, 'Gosh dang it, we need to name this mountain.'"

It will still take a few years before there is an official name. The city has to go through a formal application process with the Arizona State Board on Geographic and Historic Names.

Scottsdale will narrow a list of names and send them to the board, which will research and select the most appropriate.

Suggestions can be made at pinnaclepeakpark.com or by calling 480-312-0991.

I think we should all submit Mount HAZ as a name.
I did at least.

Well, but it's in SCOTTSDALE! How's about "Honky Hill?" Or "Rich B***h Ridge?"

Joe, I believe it's part of the Pinnacle Peak Trail to the west. I hike it once in awhile and could give it my best shot to live up to that proposed name. :)
For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.

Perhaps we could call it "Hey-now-take-it-easy-some-of-us-live-in-scottsdale-lets-not-judge-too-much-up-in-here-now Peak". But yes we do have a lot of bitches

Yeah i thought it's got potential, for short we can just call it H.N.T.I.E.S.O.U.L.I.S.L.N.J.T.M.U.I.H.N. Peak

Well, seeing how the results of anything designed by committee tends to be absurd, I think it might end up being something like "The-Politically-Correctly-Named-Peak-near-Pinnacle" or "Mt. Sin Nombre"...

Bartels Massif
Mount D-Bag
Airhead Mountain

It will probably get some horribly lame, generic name like "Tonto Mountain," or "Saguaro Peak."

I still like Honky Hill the best. Easy to remember and pronounce, etc. And it suits the area, of course!

Yeah, I live in the Redneck Alps, people make fun of my area, too! ;)

Bartels Massif has a nice ring to it too.
