i am wanting to visit this area before june, because i will be moving to egypt, but... as you might of guessed, all of the permits are taken. my question is, is there a way to optain unused permits or get them another way, like the day of? or is anyone taking this trip that has an opening for two?
i saw that you can do this trip using day trips, is that worth it? what are the miles like and do you get the same experience?

Re: paria caynon
With an early start, a daytrip from Wire Pass down the Buckskin and UPSTREAM out the Paria to Whitehouse (vehicle shuttle required) is do-able, especially with the long days of late May.
The real meat-and-potatoes is the Buckskin, it's one continuous 12 mile slot canyon until it joins the Paria. From that confluence down to Lees ferry is beautiful, but in a different way, it opens up as you progress downstream - and the last 10-ish miles into Lees in May would be damn toasty. For dayhiking purposes, exiting UP the Paria from the confluence is the way to go.
Let me know if you choose to go & maybe I can set you up with someone to offer to *pick up your vehicle for an, uh, oil change, yeah, that's it; and then accidently return it to a different trailhead (this is NOT a shuttle).
White House to Paria/Buckskin confluence: 7 miles
Wire Pass to Paria/Buckskin confluence: 14 miles
Buckskin T/H to Paria/Buckskin confluence: 16 miles
Lee's Ferry to Paria/Buckskin Gulch confluence: 31 miles

Re: paria caynon
you can always try calling the BLM office to see if they have any cancellations or exceptions. I have heard of this working before, at least in the case of when Aravaipa permits were sold out online. They may say no but it can't hurt to inquire. Hope you can make it there as Paria is worth seeing before you leave AZ!

Re: paria caynon
on short notice I'd go with option K.U.R.T.
Just remember they're not technically allowed to call it a "shuttle"

Re: paria caynon
If you can get up there a little early the day before doing the paria/buckskin/wire pass day-hike loop, a mountain bike shuttle is also very doable. I've done it the opposite direction of kurt - set up camp at White House, drive around to Wire Pass and leave the motor vehicle, bike back to White House, camp, hike down Paria and up Buckskin the next day. There's usually enough people in this area that you could probably hitch back to the campground without too much trouble. But do whatever it takes to see this place before you go!

There is the (free) 'State Line Campground" just a mile or so down HRV Road from Wire Pass as well. Break camp, drop the vehicle @ Wire Pass & bike to W.H. that AM. A lot more peaceful and scenic camping there than WH, plus you'll be camped with your vehicle..... closer to the COOLER!

Re: paria caynon
Dude, enjoy. We did it this time last year (Whitehouse to Lee's Ferry). We did it in 4 days, 3 nights. Best trip ever. One day I'll get off my pumpkin and make a video of the trip.

Re: paria caynon
It doesn't take a whole day to get there (or to get home) - you may want to take some time along the way & hike Waterholes - or head into Canyon X (guided only) if you are using 89.pickelltree wrote:now i just need to set a date i guess, doing it as day hikes, i would only need 3 days? get up there, set up the shuttle, camp, day hike, camp, day hike and drive home??
You may want to head in from 89A... that way you could check out Lees Ferry, fish or hike and then head west to HRV Road and north to Stateline CG. Or, do a loop, heading up 89A and back on 89. Either way, I'd plan to exit on a Friday or Saturday as that's the only days that the Paria Outpost offers their fantastic buffet (think slow-cooked brisket). They are on 89 about 200' west of the Paria Bridge. Next door to that is the Paria Guest Ranch - stop in and see Easton; he'll hook you up with a shower and a place to bed down if you want. This is only about 3 miles from White House T/H+/-. Remember when you visit this area to stock up on gas/provisions beforehand or you'll be driving to Page or Kanab for them.

Re: paria caynon
just got back, buckskin is really great, you have to stop and realize what a wonderful place you are in every now and then so you don't take for granted where you are.
as far as the wave, don't go there without a permit. we talked to some rangers and they had arrested 4 people just that weekend. all had to go to federal court and would get a 500 dollar fine. wow. we meet people from germany and argentina that had come over just to see the wave. i couldn't believe that this was such a destination.
