AAI Blog

Post by PaleoRob »

For those of you who have been interested in participating in/with Arizona Archaeology Irregulars, I have finally gone ahead and set up a blog:
http://azarchirreg.blogspot.com
This should especially useful for those of you who are not on Facebook. I am aware that several HAZers are on the AAI Facebook group, but I also wanted to throw this one out there for those of you who want to help preserve Arizona's neglected history/prehistory. If you've wanted to go on or set up an AAI site visit/patrol/volunteer day, this site should be able to answer your questions as I update it.
Joe, any way to get AAI set up as a hike group on here to add as a partner?

There are Irregulars? Are there Regulars? Is there a Bearded Infantry?

Well, Regulars would imply commissioned, regulated, approved-of and all that. I believe that would be Rangers, Sheriffs, etc. I have a beard, but am not in the infantry. Just a volunteer group that does what it cane to protect our past.

I'm a bit older than Jim so I'll probably be part of the "Irregulars". That happens when you get older....I did understand that correctly...right?

I'm a member of both, (I guess!) :D No actual connection, although, Rob, are you an AAS member this year?

No connection, except that some people are members of both, like Liz said. I may join this year. I keep contemplating it, but never seem to follow through.

Just a quick update: I've made a Site Visitation Form. I urge you, even if you don't consider yourself part of AAI and you are just a casual hiker, please take the time to fill out the form. It is short, quick, and easy. It will help keep track of damage and vandalism as it occurs and hopefully help Law Enforcement catch the people that did it. The form is here:

A somewhat related upcoming event =>
FREE PANEL DISCUSSION: PAINTED, SCRATCHED, DEFACED; ROCK ART VANDALISM IN ARIZONA
Saturday February 5, 2011 from 1 pm to 2pm
Deer Valley Rock Art Center, 3711 W. Deer Valley Rd., Phoenix AZ
(2 blocks west of 35th Avenue

Panelists will include Neil Weintraub, Kaibab National Forest archaeologist; Peter Pilles, Coconino National Forest archaeologist; Lyle Balenquah, acting curator of anthropology, Museum of Northern Arizona; and Todd Bostwick, retired City of Phoenix archaeologist.

Vandalism to rock art sites in Arizona is a distressing and persistent reality. To promote public awareness and debate about the preservation of rock art sites, the panel will discuss a variety of topics, including recent vandalism at Keyhole Sink, debates over rock art conservation models, Native American concerns about the destruction of cultural heritage, as well as stewardship of archaeological sites.
