Fraser Benchmark (Peak 4618)

Post by CannondaleKid »

Fraser Benchmark has been hovering near the top of my to-do list since a recon hike to Eagle Spring in December 2012, it just never made it to the top. But no longer, with great weather this time of year I figure it's high time I git'-er-done.

I'm planning on leaving East Mesa by 7 am. If anyone is interested and wants to tag along, I'll have room for two more (one comfortably and one with a bit less so). I'll take Hewitt Road to FR172 to FR1900 to Millsite Canyon then drive as far up as my Cherokee will take me. By cutting down the hiking time and distance I may hit another one of 3 peaks on my list in the neighborhood...
Peak 3438, Hewitt Ridge North & Hewitt Ridge South... once I've hit all three I'll have completed all twelve 300' prominence peaks in the Picketpost Quadrangle.

Interested? PM me for more info and GPS route.

You do realize that driving a vehicle past Quail Spring, the official end of FR1900 is illegal correct? Into Millsite Canyon past Quail Spring begins the official Tonto NF- Millsite Canyon Trail #237 for the next ~5.2 miles. There use to be carbonate trail signs at both ends of Trail #237 indicating "Trail #237 and No Vehicles Allowed" but people continues to remove this signage.

For a long time I was under that impression but I've gone through several times now with a Jeep group whose leader works with the Forest Service. Unless he was taking advantage of his status, I figured it was ok.

To be sure, I'll check with the FS today and see what the official line is.

Of course in my experience, the official line seems to be pretty variable depending on which FS office you check with as well as who you talk to.
