MAC OS - .gpx help

( post converted from a question to an answer to help others )

If downloading changes the .gpx file name adding an .xml suffix then rename it. Remove the .xml suffix so it ends in .gpx

example_hike.gpx.xml
needs to be
example_hike.gpx

next
Go into "get info" and delete the .xml from the name under "Name & Extension". Then a prompt pops up asking to keep it an .xml file or change it to a .gpx file ( .gpx is correct ).
