CALIF- Eastern Sierra TH-TRs Access FM Hwy 395

Post by Grasshopper »

From John9L & BiFrost's recent CA- JMT trip segment along with ddgrinning's most recent Yosemite and Mt. Whitney trips, I started reflecting back on some of my past CA Eastern Sierra hiking memories related to the many Eastern Sierra TH access locations in from CA Hwy 395 (north & south) to access/exit the JMT, PCT, Sequoia NP, and Kings Canyon NP.

A few days ago as part of my reflections :) , I accessed our HAZ- "Route Manager" module and relived some great memories by posting Waypoint locations South (at 9 mile Cyn Rd) to North (at Rock Crk Rd) along CA Hwy 395--> http://hikearizona.com/map.php?MY=7709&M=6 which is also "Public" viewable in our "Route Manager". Along with the endless number of awesome day hiking and/or multi-day backpacking planning opportunities that these Eastern Sierra TH access points provide, I thought that some of them could also provide an excellent planning tool for as needed hike entering & exiting the JMT, PCT, Sequoia NP, and Kings Canyon NP areas.

I was also thinking about sending this above linked "Route Manager Waypoint Listing Tool" to post and then to link various HAZ- CA Eastern Sierra Hike Descriptions, but I'm not sure if our HAZ member community and/or HAZ Development Team would agree it to be that beneficial and used planning tool.

What do you think? :-k

Can you add GPS tracks for the actual roads you drive between 395 and the THs as well as waypoints marking the main THs that these roads lead to? :M2C:

That was a good recommendation :thanx:

I spent a few hours over the past two days adding these ~seventeen "Park/TH Start" waypoint locations with descriptive comments that further explain and agree with the CA Hwy 395 exit Waypoint locations- ie, the nine yellow flag WP exits in total along Hwy 395 South (at 9 mile Cyn Rd) to North (at Rock Crk Rd)-->
http://hikearizona.com/map.php?MY=7709&M=6 (Please Note: Along Hwy 395 north of the Rock Creek Road exit and prior-to reaching Yosemite NP there are certainly more Hwy 395 road exits to reach other Eastern Sierra THs which will connect with the JMT, PCT, and Kings Canyon NP, but for purposes of this first rather time consuming but enjoyable effort, I am only listing these nine Hwy 395 exits). HAZ-Route Manager with its various Topo, Map, and Satellite Overlays to access is what made all this possible.. it ROCKS! :DANCE:

Also, to add the drawn GPS driving routes for the actual roads you drive between 395 and the actual "Park/TH Starts" I see as way too much effort. I would hope that my WP locations, all with comments/descriptions would suffice as to how to drive from Hwy 395 to any THs interested (of the ~seventeen) I have included.
Also, I would think that in time the "to be linked" Hike Descriptions will include the actual TH Driving Directions as they should.

Any additional thoughts (pro or con) before I PM for permission to "send to post" for us to begin linking our applicable HAZ- CA Eastern Sierra Hike Descriptions?

It would seem those that would use this instead of native mapping, HAZ Mobile or HAZ Tracks would need the roads :M2C:

Shouldn't be too time consuming. Create a drive route then convert it to a track.
You can fine tune this one I threw together in five minutes http://hikearizona.com/map.php?MY=7761&M=3

@joe bartels
Converting a drive route is a great option... But there are an awful lot of forest roads that don't be evil doesn't recognize and therefore won't create a drive route to begin with.

I made this one a while ago when I was planning for the John Muir Trail. http://hikearizona.com/map.php?MY=5741&M=3

The first half of the hike uses John9L's route, the second half I traced. I don't know how accurate it is. The roads I traced, this was before I knew how to transfer google directions to Route Manager. The exit routes I traced. Some of them I got lazy on and they still need to be finished. Use at your own risk.

Ok I watched the video and then went into my http://hikearizona.com/map.php?MY=7709&M=3 and moved the cross hair to the waypoint on Hwy 395 for 9 Mile Cyn Rd to Kennedy Meadows TH then I right clicked my mouse and selected "from", then I moved the cross hair to the Kennedy Meadows TH and right clicked my mouse and selected to", then the driving route was drawn correctly, then I moved it to route manager.

Next I moved up Hwy 395 and selected my waypoint for Whitney Portal in Lone Pine with the cross hairs over that waypoint, then I right clicked my mouse and selected "from" and the page moved down to the just completed driving route for Kennedy Meadows and the screen showed it drawn a second time with an A and B (from-to ?) and when I deleted that second drawing and moved back up to the Whitney Portal waypoint on Hwy 395 and tried it again, the same thing happened again.. what an I doing wrong? thx

@Grasshopper
Generating multiple driving directions on the same map can be a bit of a challenge due to it defaulting to the previous directions. Sometimes I can get it to clear, other times not.

But I would just do the one you want, send it to RM and save.

Then go back and reload the map from scratch and do a new driving direction on another road. The key is to reload the map page again so everything resets.

Interesting, but it is time consuming and complicated for only two cups of coffee consumed so far :doh:

Also, as I try to work through issuing these driving routes (as I now have too many hours invested in this project to just scrap it), I wanted to let the HAZ- Development Team know that there is presently an issue that needs correcting in Route Manager "WP Comments Section" where the adding comments editing seems kind-of unlimited during actual editing, but is not and thus the reason why most of my "WP Comments Edit Descriptions" seem to presently end in mid phrase and/or mid word spelling, etc.. :roll: I realize that I am one of the few that needs a paragraph to explain what some others can explain in ten words or less, but I do think our Route Manager "WP Comments Editing Field" should be correctly set at some point to not continue to advance like it presently does :? now giving one the impression that all comments editing will appear when saved and later reviewed.. when it presently will not.

I also might add that this present "WP Comments Editing" issue is one of the main reasons, as I see it, that it is now necessary for me to issue all these actual driving routes. If all my original edited WP comments had been correctly saved and not deleted, all my WP yellow flag comments and WP TH comments would have synced to each other making more sense and thus I now feel not now making the issuing of these actual driving routes necessary (for driving in to the THs from Hwy 395). I need another cup of coffee ;)

Corrected the issue. It should not have allowed a description in a comment field. GPX is a universal format so we have to go with the lower end of what will work for the most devices.

(all yellow flag WP exits along Hwy 395 South 'at 9 mile Cyn Rd' to North 'at Rock Crk Rd')

I have now completed and update my above linked to include all the driving routes to all the main TH Starts from CA Hwy 395 exit roads. Utilizing our valuable planning tool, HAZ- Route Manager, I feel confident that all listed TH "Park/Start" locations and all "Driving Routes" are accurate as included herein :)

Now, what should we do with it so it can be more visible and readily available as an ongoing HAZ reference planning tool for as needed CA- Eastern Sierra day hikes, extended backpack trips, and access points to/from the John Muir Trail, PCT, Sequoia NP, and Kings Canyon NP?.. Please don't say you don't know :o :lol:

All additional thoughts (pro or con) still requested :)

@Grasshopper
That looks nice Hank. Maybe making it a Mapped Area would be the most useful way for people to reference it? "Eastern Sierra TH Driving Routes" or something similar.

It wouldn't show up every single hike description page, but I think people doing any reasonable research would find it.

A "Mapped Area" is a collection of "Official GPS Routes" for an area. So it doesn't really fit.

I'd post it as a generic gps route and link it to relevant descriptions. Title is the key. Full words should begin with a space in front.**

West Pinto - Campaign - Fireline - Reavis Loop ( 5 words )
West Pinto-Campaign-FireLine-Reavis Loop ( 3 words )

CALIF-Eastern Sierra TH-TRs Access FM Hwy 395
In the above name Sierra is the primary search term. All posts have a state associated already after a comma at the end so I would leave out state names. All caps will be edited down too. TH FM or Hwy are low performers in search. 395 is unlikely. Forest road numbers are pretty low in searches and I don't see any highway numbers in the top thousand searches.

The following would be among the most beneficial in searches
Eastern Sierra Nevada Range Trailheads

** Within the last month description page names are now middle of word searchable in some areas. Should be sitewide by the end of the year. Next up will be generic gps routes. Labels will likely be last.

Is there a number limit of how many HAZ- Hike Descriptions can be linked to a GPS Route? I hope not.. :sweat:

I think saying "directly relevant" is perhaps a little redundant just saying :M2C: I mean if its relevant its relevant, no need for directly...;)
