Help with project
I need help with altering the finish to make it duller. It appears to be very thin aluminum with a laser etch. I have been using some very fine sand paper on it. Plan to use a flat clear polyurethane spray on it at the end. Any other ideas???

Re: Help with project
The polyurethane spray may give you the dulling effect you're looking for. The first coat should be very light and from a greater distance than recommended on the spray can, then follow that with a second coat. Just guessing though.

If you have access to naval jelly or muratic acid (pool acid) you may try some of that on some scrap aluminim if available or the back of this plaque (if not imprinted on both sides), to see if it gives the desired result.

@joe bartels
ALSO...... Wear rubber gloves, well ventilated area, cut it back to at least 50/50 with water to start with.
The carpet in the back of my truck is melted, where a gallon jug dripped a bit on the way home from the pool store one day.

If you want I'll bring the chainsaw over and help out with some of the safety precautions.

Re: Help with project
Making some progress on this, antiqued one with some shoe polish of all things. Have been in contact with the local Buffalo Soldiers Assoc in Tucson and they are interested in the whole deal. I might be taking a local historian or two down there to view the site. Already prepped them what to expect. It'll be interesting to see how things proceed---
