GPS Routes - GPSr Track Recording for Multi-Day Trips

Post by Grasshopper »

This recommended subject GPSr procedure/steps for recording "multiple day" outing GPS Routes is something I (as an active GPSr user and HAZ GPSr Route poster) feel like I should already know how to do, but I'm not sure I do  .

With many of us on HAZ as active GPS day hikers only (not multi-day backpackers) with me included, generally always GPSr record with the need to save only one (or maybe two) different day hikes at a time, usually at the end of that day hike (I first turn track off, then save it to my GPSr Favorites Section then I clear my GPSr track manager internal memory).

Since I no longer go on multi-day backpacks, I'm just not familiar with the recommended procedure/steps on the GPSr to record multi-day GPS Routes and at the end of the multi-day trip, having these "daily" GPS Routes correctly linked together as one continuous multi-day trip with total multi-day mileage shown and also having the other multi-day trip total statistics (AEG, Trip Total Time, etc.) showing up correctly on the GPSr Trip Computer Page ? (A Multi-Day Trip example: Oregon Hiker's 2/8/15 recent 3nt/4 day backpack--> http://hikearizona.com/trip=113629 )

Question: I'm unaware of the term "GPSr". What does that stand for? :-k

Since I use an old-skool eTrex, my reply to this may be irrelevant to more modern GPS devices. But on my eTrex, I NEVER "save" anything. Doing so does not include time data.

I always stop recording at my camp, and restart the next day, continuing the same "ACTIVELOG" track.

Only when I get back home and upload the track into HAZ Route Manager do I split the days up if necessary. This way the distance, time, etc. is all preserved as it was recorded, including in the separate tracks I create in RM after the upload.

Even on my old skool eTrex, I've never filled the internal (non-expandable) memory on a multi-day trip.

When using the HAZ Tracks app on my phone, I save each segment when I complete it since HAZ Tracks keeps all the relevant data with each file save.

I believe that if you save separate daily files you can combine the tracks back together again (in HAZ RM), but it doesn't combine all the cumulative data automatically (you need to manually add up the time/breaks/etc. yourself) once you have saved individual tracks. To get all the data you must continue a single recording (activelog on my old garmin). Tracks combined at the end of a multi-day trip will compute total mileage and elevation statistics, but not time and breaks.
I'm not sure what my spirit animal is, but I'm confident it has rabies.

GPSr = gps receiver according to the urbandictionary. The Eagle uses another term that makes me pause each time I hear it... he says "GPS Radio" when talking about enabling location services on smartphones.

Recording
Unless you use an old eTrex it seems to be a personal preference for recording. On multiple day trips I'm all over the board. Sometimes individual tracks per day, sometimes a single continuous track.

For HAZ Tracks I was resetting daily since I subconsciously know it's doing increased calculations with each point added. Interesting my old $20 droid gets the same mileage later in a hike when the battery is below 35% cranking out thousands of times more calculations. These once complex calculations are a breeze for today's processors. I got 40,000 points on Fenix last week as it only records .FIT files to gather heart rate and all that jazz.

Posting
Personal preference again. Believe it would be easiest for others to follow if you post 1 file. It can be a single track or multiple tracks. If you post a triplog using the "Recent GPS Route" "New" buttons it will do all the math for you.
ie: last week we hiked Monument Mountain
- when someone goes and looks at that page it profiles the 1st track
- when you post a triplog from said route it adds everything up
- since I posted HAZ Tracks & Fenix I had to divide mileage, time and breaks it auto completed in my triplog

@chumley @joe bartels Thank you two for your feedback on this. To answer the original question I proposed, what I kind-of envisioned for a reply, and was obviously not clear enough for you & others (to hopefully also include Oregon Hiker) to read my mind ;) , was something like-
Day 1 AM (at trip start): With GPSr Computer Screen & Current Track Mgr- Internal Memory Screens cleared, start a new GPS Track;
Day 1 PM (at campsite arrival): On GPSr... bla.. bla.. bla..
Day 2 AM (at campsite departure): On GPSr.. bla.. bla.. bla..
Day 2 PM (at campsite arrival): On GPSr.. bla.. bal.. bla..
and Day 3 AM/PM, Day 4 AM/PM (trip end): On GPSr.. bla.. bla.. bla..

Maybe what I would like to better understand how to do here would be better discussed (walked-through) in person with that individual who knows how to do it vs explaining how to step through it here? (sometimes it tough being a "Detailapelli")

everything I know for modern hand held garmins is posted at faq.php#f2r3

I haven't used an Oregon 600 or newer to know if they follow the Fenix path where you start and stop like HAZ Tracks instead of the reset jazz.

I just record a track each day and stitch them together when I get home.

Worked perfectly except for my last trip where my GPS files got corrupted for 2 of the 7 days :(
