Colonel Devin Trail Camping Recommendation

Hi All,

I am doing an overnighter this week and plan on hiking the Colonel Devin Trail. Is this trail ok for a dog including a trip to the railroad cave? Also, any recommendations on where to camp? I thought about staying at General Springs area, but wanted to know if there was a better recommendation. Thank you!

A dog would be fine for the trail and the side trip to the railroad tunnel/cave.

You can camp along the trail in several spots and there is water towards the middle/bottom. The top...half or so of the trail is not conducive to camping. There are many places to camp once you get to the top of the rim. If you continue to walk the road to near the General Springs cabin there are several fine spots as well, though it is generally dry in that area except for the spring. West of the cabin across the road is a well-used spot that is very nice.

I am not sure if the roads up top are open yet this early in the year. They close for awhile each winter due to snow/mud. They would be fine for hiking, but you may have to hike back to the bottom rather than do this as a shuttle.

the roads up top are still closed. I would hike up Colonel Devin and then camp somewhere along the Fred Haught Trail.

Roads are closed which is why I chose the Colonel Devin Trail. I initially was going to continue on the cabin loop, but really only have 1 night to spend there. I thought about camping at General Springs Cabin or Fred Haught Cabin, any recommendations? I may also decide to do Horton Springs, but have been there before and wanted to try something new.

If you camp at General Springs, it makes for a pretty short hike. I would just head down Fred Haught as far as you want to hike. If you make it to the cabin, that's great. There's water the entire way at this time of year, and plenty of opportunities to camp anywhere you want. Fred Haught trail has very little elevation change and you can make pretty good time on it.

or you could take the Babe Haught Trail from the fish hatchery up to Knoll Lake... the lake is quiet, peaceful, and filled to the brim right now. Its only about 5 miles each way.

i was always fond of the aspen cabin area, from fr95 it's way too short, so hike in from the bottom! not sure on mileage, looks at a glance to be 11-12 each way.
