Orthocarpus purpurascens (Castilleja exserta)

Common Names:

Habitat: Hillsides, roadsides, flats, sandy plains. can from a dramatic blanket after a wet season.

Flowers: pinkish flowering spikes 4" - 6" tall. We're hikers not botanists and pink is the predominant color you will see; but actually the flower is a tiny yellow flower surrounded by brushy, purple bracts (bracts are modified leaves which grow at the base of the flowers).

Description: 6" - 8" tall. green, brushy leaves about 1" long.
Comments: The plant is called Escobita in Spanish, which means "little broom".
