Flowers: white or pink, bell-shaped, each 1/4" long, produced in racemes (clusters) of about 3" at twig ends. The fruit is a rough-textured red or orange-red berry 3/8" diameter containing yellow fruit flesh with numerous very small seeds; the fruits are edible but have minimal flavor and are not widely eaten.
Description: Tree, evergreen, to 40' tall. 1 1/2'diameter. crooked trunk and twisted branches. leaves are spirally arranged, oval to broad lanceolate, with a serrated or entire margin. 1 1/2"-3" long and 1/2" to 1" wide. Shiny green above, paler beneath. Bark is rough, mostly light gray, reddish in patches, broken up into small square plates, similar to manzanita
