Ammospermophilus harrisii

Habitat
Southern Arizona, Sonora Mexico

Description
The little Harris antelope squirrel is often mistaken for a chipmunk; chipmunks, however, are higher elevation animals, while Harris antelope squirrel is a creature of the rocky deserts. The Harris™ antelope squirrel has a white stripe on its side, but not on its face, and a bushy black tail that it often carries arched over the back. The underbelly is white. (From Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum website www.desertmuseum.org)

Comments
White stripe on both sides of their body but not through their face distinguishes them from Cliff chipmunk. A. harrisii also lives at lower elevations. Normally holds tail over back. One of the few mammals that you will see during the heat of summer. The tail is somewhat flattened. They live in burrows, which they dig for themselves. They are diurnal and do not hibernate (though they become less active during the winter), so they are fairly easily seen. Source: Wikipedia
