Sitta carolinensis

Common Names: Nuthatch, White-Breasted Nuthatch
Habitat: Mixed and deciduous forests.
Description: A small bird of about 6 inches in length, the White-Breasted nuthatch can easily be recognized by the white completely surrounding the eye (the only North American nuthatch to have this characteristic), and their descent of trees head-first.
Comments: Can often be seen in the forests of northern Arizona, from Flagstaff, the White Mountains, the Kaibab Plateau, and the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Possibly present in other forested areas of the state. The parents will continue to feed the young after the young have fledged. During the early summer the young can often be seen following the parents from tree to tree, begging while the adults find grubs and feed them.
