Petrochelidon pyrrhonota

Common Names: Cliff Swallow

Habitat:Open areas around buildings and Cliffs. Found throughout the U.S. in Summer, but Winters in South America.

Description:Sparrow sized with dull Steel Blue above, Buff White below. Pale Buff Rump with Squared Tail. Throat is dark Chestnut, with White Forehead. Southwestern birds may have a Chestnut Forehead.

Comments:Cave Swallow is similar, but is smaller with Buff colored Throat and darker Rump. The Introduction of the House Sparrow has led to the decline of the Cliff Swallow, as Sparrows invade the nests, forcing the Swallows to abandon entire colonies.
