Grows like a shrub or tree, with its branch that opens at an acute angle* and reaches a size of up to 2 meters.

Stems purple to greenish violet, with sections 4-18 cm (1.6-3.1 inches) long and 1-2 cm (0.4-0.8 inches) in diameter that extend above the hump.

The round areolas, are brown and turn gray with age and have glochidia (hair-like spines or short prickles) up to 1 millimeter long dark yellow. Six to eight little interwoven thorns are present in all the areolas, they are short, golden and similar to bristles. The upper spines are erect reddish brown, and 0.6 to 1.1 centimeters long. The curved back part and slightly flattened basal (base) spines are whitish to reddish brown and reach a length of 1 to 1.8 cm (0.25-0.7 inches).

The flowers are green, yellow, bronze, red, pink or magenta. The obovate (narrower end at the base) fruit, of yellowish green color, often dyed red or purple, is fleshy and leathery from 2.5 to 4 cm (1-1.6 inches)long and from 1 to 2 cm(0.4-0.8 inches) in diameter.
