Interpreting the Past
Understanding the past is complex, especially when that history is 300 years deep. Archeology provides some evidence but does not give a full picture. Historical documents often provide some narrative but from a limited point of view. Oral histories help fill in some gaps. Taken all together the pieces come together to provide an understanding, but details can be hard to find. For example, an assumption in the 1930s led to the inaccurate reconstruction of this bastion. Later excavations found no evidence of a defensive structure. Although we know soldiers constantly stood guard on the mission. This highlights the challenge of accurately presenting history.
