awh, my wonderful Grand Union hotel, a Fort Benton landmark. Several of my relatives stayed here the last couple days as they were in town for the 100th anniversary Reunion of the Fred Romain and Josepha Kaufmann Romain homestead south of Chester (north of Ft Benton). We had 120 people in attendance. It was a wonderful celebration of my Grandparent's legacy.
from Montana's official travel site: The Grand Union Hotel has gained a new lease on life following a skillful restoration supervised by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the U.S. Parks Department, and the Montana State Historic Preservation Office which has preserved the historical character of Montana's oldest operating hotel and one of its most famous landmarks.
Upon opening in 1882, the Grand Union Hotel was reputed to be the finest hotel between Chicago and Seattle. Elegantly restored to its original splendor and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Grand Union Hotel is proud to continue its tradition of providing the grandest experience in comfort and hospitality to be found in Montana.
Built on the wooded banks of the Missouri River, the century old Grand Union Hotel commands impressive views of the river where long ago Lewis and Clark traveled and broad bottom steamboats from St. Louis docked. As the uppermost navigable point on the Missouri, Fort Benton was the birthplace of Montana and the stepping off point for the fur and buffalo trade, the gold rushes of the Old West, and the settlement of the U.S. Northwest and Western Canada.
