We stayed in the Pioneer Mercantile which has been converted into a hotel. We used to shop here back in the 1960s. http://www.pioneerlodgemt.com/ Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, our building is the remodeled Pioneer Mercantile Store, originally built in 1916. T. C. Power began his mercantile store with tents on this site in 1867. The first building was constructed in 1882. That building, and the next one Power built, both burned to the ground. So in 1916, the current building was made to last. The walls are about 18" thick and the floors are 9" of solid cement, making them nearly indestructible. To preserve the building's historic appearance, the outside still looks like a store.
Before heading out to Lost Lake with our cousins, we decided to walk the levee along Front Street on the Missouri River. I never fail to do this walk when I'm in town and if you're ever there, I highly encourage you to take the time.
We walked from the north side at the L&C and Sacajewa Memorial bronze statue to the Grand Union Hotel. When we came back from our hike at Lost Lake http://hikearizona.com/photoset=26563 we took the walk across the Big Muddy on the old Fort Benton bridge, something you should also do if you're there.
Here is a combined stills and movies of that walk: http://youtu.be/DKFrORrLSgU |

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled. |
