The Antietam battlefield's period appearance is maintained by being actively farmed in the same areas as on September 17, 1862. Bloody Lane is 100 yards beyond the small hill. Note how French's and Richardson's Union divisions would have been able to advance close to the Confederate lines before being fired on. Despite being able to approach under cover, 1/4 of Antietam's casualties occured in that narrow strip.
