Initials on the back wall of the alcove. It looked like a black tar like substance was used to paint the letters. I recall from my cattle ranching youth that a black tar like substance was sometimes used to seal off the wound left from cutting off the horns of young cattle but I doubt that cattle ranchers in this area bothered with de-horning. Perhaps the same black tar was used to seal rock cuts on horse and cattle ankles?.
