Turkey Creek Canyon is a nice alternative to hiking in Aravaipa Canyon past the wilderness boundary which requires a permit. This canyon is a deep fairly wide (50-100 yds) cliff sided slot canyon with a 4x4 road up the bottom of the canyon and several primitive car camping sites spaced out over about 2 miles. Warning, this is not a place to be if heavy rains are expected. Partially washed out sections of the road and many creek crossings with flowing water plus being there on week days meant I had the canyon to myself for the next two days. Well, almost to myself. A herd of Javelina visited my camp each night and greeted me on my day hike up the canyon. Also, some critters were making weird noises at sundown that sounded more like a bunch of monkeys than the expected howling coyotes. The canyon bottom is lined with hugh AZ Sycamore and oak trees and even has a token Indian cliff dwelling making it a very scenic and interesting place to visit. |
