The squared edges of the various ponds and reservoirs designates the man-made reservoirs. Most of those built in this area were done by the Romain Bros. They were an extremely hard working group and carried on the legacy of their parent, Fred and his brothers John and Dominic of Keuterville, ID
I just ran across this from 2014 correspondence my dad wrote to his nephew Dallas: " I would say that from the late forties through 1960s the Romain Bros build over 30-40 or more reservoir dams. We used to spend two or three months after seeding was done building dams in south Liberty County and northern Choteau County."
The Romain Reservoir is at the top of Dead Indian Coulee that runs north into the Marias River. The coulee, however, is a dry coulee. It was an old outlet for the Marias River. Marias (Muh rye us) is a name from the Lewis and Clark Expedition and is supposed to be pronounced as a girl's name (Meriwether's cousin) after the expedition in 1805. Most of the Romain farms get their water from this river including their drinking water via a pumphouse right on the river at the end of Dead Indian Coulee. https://discoveringmontana.com/rivers/marias/
