Here's what happened: I have overlayed a Forest Service Topo map with an OpenTopo. The circled red is the Old 288. Magenta is the new 288. They both take you to the 288 Trail Head. But I missed some turns. After looking at some photos by others, I see that I should have been on a ridgeline. Whereas, I was bushwacking below, on the south side of the ridge. (Cyan is my approx track.) The Spring is about 500 feet South of the 42/288 sign post. But there was plenty of water in Center creek.
