Wendy walking through the church. It really is a shame that this is all that is left. I included the NPS info video in my video (which is short and pretty good I think) and it has pictures of what it used to look like [ youtube video ] . It sure makes you appreciate that we have Tumacacori and San Xavier among other preserved Missions.

The historic property is also home to the adobe ruins of Father Eusebio Kino’s first mission in what is now the United States, whose name comes from the Tohono O’odham word “gusutaqui,” or “big spring.” According to Wingfield’s son Ted, who still lives on adjacent property, his family donated the mission site to the federal government in 1988. Former Interior Secretary Stewart Udall and his brother, Congressman Morris Udall, traveled from Washington, D.C. to formally accept the donation.

“I have the contract that specified the government would restore it back to the original, but they never did get the funding,” Ted Wingfield said. The crumbling adobe walls is sadly, all that remains today.

Check out the NPS website to see a photo of what the area used to look like https://www.nps.gov/tuma/learn/historyc ... uevavi.htm
