Silk oak (Grevillea robusta) is an introduced tree species on the Big Island (and other Hawaiian Islands) that was originally planted as a timber source. While the wood has a beautiful grain and was used for cabinetry, the tree has become invasive due to its prolific reproduction and allergenic sawdust. The state is now working to control its spread, particularly in areas like the Puuwaawa`a wildlife sanctuary.
