The climb to the top is entirely off trail. I pretty much made a straight line up to the top. That is, until it really started getting steep and rocky. At 8400 feet my jacket had to go. I set it down at the base of a huge pine and set a waypoint in my Garmin to find it on the way down. At about 8800 feet, I had to start making my own switchbacks, looking for the safest routes to continue. I was happy to have my homemade sotol hiking stick along as the climb got steeper. The stick allowed me to use more upper body as my legs began to tire. My pace was quick and my heart rate was rapid. At about 9250 I came to a rock cliff about 12-15 feet. I wasn't sure how far this cliff stretched across the ridgeline, so I just picked a moderately sloped rock face and climbed up past the obstacle. Finally, the angle of ascent got easier. I had approached the ridgeline at 9400 feet in a time of 1 hour, 10 minutes. I took a few pictures of camp from this fantastic viewpoint. The trailer looked like a white spec from where I stood. Now it was time to make my steep descent back to camp. This ended up being more of a run, sliding through soft dirt and rock, and grabbing trees every so often to slow down my progress. My Garmin Foretrex led me right back to my coat at 8400 feet. I made it back down the mountain and into camp in 30 minutes time. Great challenging hike! |
