| no partners | | Although the county has designated this trail as a "competitive track" for biking and cross-country, I did not see any signs warding off hikers. I also did not see any other people on the trail this day.
This trail may not be well known because it is not in the area of the park that is visited by most people. It is located behind PIR. I can't remember the exact road I turned on, but I believe it was at the end of the PIR parking area. You take that road south and eventually it turns to dirt. Bear to the left and eventually you will reach the trail head. If you bear right you'll fid where the trail ends. I guess you ould ark at eithe rpoint as they are not that far apart. There is a pay box where you should put $ to pay the park fee. This is required since this section of the park is not inside the main park which is manned by a park employee for fee collection.
After hiking .25 mile there is a fork in the trail. To the left is the long loop which is 8 miles. To the right is the technical loop which is 5 miles. The word technical tempted me so I chose that route. The trail is not difficult for a hiker, but it did contain many steep ups and downs in and out of washes. I'm sure mountain bikers would enjoy this.
The first part of the trail has nice views of downtown Phoenix and PIR. About halfway through the trail reaches a pass which offers some nice views back South into the Estrellas (see pix). The last part of the trail looks out West before descending back to the trail head.
Overall, this trail was a nice hike providing a decent workout. It was very peacefull when you reach the mid point. I enjoyed the views of the Estrellas. My dogs had no problem on this trail. I would reccommend wearing hiking boots due to rocky terrain. |
